BIBLIOGRAPHY

This play was adapted from many sources, primary and secondary. To give credit where credit is due, here they are:

Gilot, Françoise and Lake, Carlton. Life with Picasso. New York: New York Review Books, 1964/2019.

The alpha and omega. My main source, and essential reading for all people.

Olivier, Fernande. Souvenirs Intimes. Paris: Calmann-Lévy, 1988.

The published diary/memoirs of Fernande, and way more informative than her first book, Picasso and His Friends. Recommended for being shockingly frank for something written in the early 1900s.

Richardson, John. A Life of Picasso (4 volumes.) New York: Random House, 1991-2021.

The definitive Picasso biography by a historian who personally knew him. I find it funny how Richardson isn’t even trying to make his subject look bad and yet he does.

Amao, Damarice, Maddox, Amanda and Ziebinska, Karolina, eds. Dora Maar. London: Tate Publishing, 2019.

A succinct look at Dora Maar’s artistic achievements, though it is frustratingly not an exhibition catalog.

Philippot, Émilia, Pissarro, Joachim, and Ruiz-Picasso, Bernard, eds. Olga Picasso. Gallimard, Paris, 2019.

Catalog for a significant show centered around Olga, his first wife. I love how scholars took until 2019 to realize “Hey, is it possible we were too hard on her?”

Philippot, Émilia, et al. Maya Ruiz-Picasso: Daughter of Pablo. Paris: Musée National Picasso, 2022.

While dedicated to Maya, this catalog is also a major insight into his life with Marie-Thérèse. It also proves I didn’t make up that thing about the toenail clippings.
